Child Is Father To The Man
Blood, Sweat And Tears – Child Is Father To The Man
Those expecting the voice of David Clayton-Thomas when they put on a Blood, Sweat And Tears LP will be disappointed with “Child Is Father To The Man.” Those in the know, however, know that they’re in for an excellent Al Kooper with the group’s first record. This one is much more than just a singer, he plays piano and various keyboards, composed almost all the tracks and also arranged for the string ensemble.
It’s the bluesy tracks like “I Love You More …” and “I Can’t Quit Her” and the vocals of Al Kooper that are true gems, but the album as a whole, in the tradition of the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper,” is a listening pleasure of the highest order. The fusion of pop, classical and jazz popularized in the late 60s by groups like Chicago Transit Authority, Colosseum and Soft Machine blended with San Francisco’s acid-folk-rock mix on Blood, Sweat And Tears.
It had the potential to be a new American musical form. Interestingly, the LP was even gold-plated as it found more and more buyers with the popularity of “B, S&T 2”.
Approach the music without prejudice – and this should be recommended to jazz and pop fans alike! Then the possibility opens up to enjoy one of the best albums of the late 60s.
