Ben Power of Blanck Mass had the perfect environment in his Edinburgh, Scotland, studio during lockdown for a piece of music that would capture the isolation central to Kaczynski’s story. Power also worked with a director whose time zone was 10 hours behind Kaczynski’s, so many sessions took place in the middle of the night, adding a special intensity to the composition process. “I wanted it to feel like an epic,” he said of the project, drawing inspiration from legends Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone to illustrate the energy of the struggle between good and evil. The gentle madness of the sounds achieved here is exquisite, slowly increasing in intensity and desperation as the score progresses. Power is able to perfectly capture the complexity, horror and deep emotionality of the film while presenting an often breathtakingly beautiful and always masterful album that stands on its own as a work of art.
